How long have you been writing?
Since I could read—call it fifty years. But I’ve only taken it really seriously since I divorced my ex-wife, about twenty years ago.
Which writers inspire you?
Tim Powers, Samuel Delany, Philip Dick, Ursula Le Guin, Donald Westlake, C S Lewis, G K Chesterton, Clive Barker… a very mixed bag.
So, what have you written?
Four novels, collectively called The Book Of Lost Doors, and a whole bunch of short fiction. I have four short fiction collections out, and a couple more in the works.
What draws you to Superversive writing?
I think that what unites us as people is not only stronger than what divides us, it’s also more interesting. No matter where or when a story is set, what draws me in is the essential humanity of the characters—even when the characters are not human. Desperate times don’t call for an extraordinary hero, what is needed is ordinary people who hold fast to the commonplace virtues—courage, loyalty, compassion, perseverance. I believe that’s true in both the real world and in fiction.
What are you working on at the minute?
I am trying to finish up a couple of stories to round out my next collection—this one will be Horror/Weird short fiction.
Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
I listen to audiobooks almost exclusively these days—usually at work or while driving. I have very eclectic tastes. Right now I’m revisiting C S Lewis’ Space Trilogy, before that I went through a number of classic SF collections—Fredric Brown, Robert Sheckly, Gerorge Alec Effinger and the like.
